By the end of the 1950s, Luigi Oberto, along with his father Giovenale, was tending 2 hectares of Nebbiolo vines on the hill of Bricco San Biagio and selling the grapes to merchants. That was until they made a decision that truly changed the course of Ciabot Berton’s history. Recognizing the real potential of their grapes, they chose to stop selling and instead turned their harvest into wine. Their first Barolo was bottled in 1961.
As the years went by, they expanded their vineyard, planting more land until reaching the current 12 hectares. In the 1980s, a new winery was built, sitting proudly in the heart of La Morra with an incredible view. On clear days, you can see the peaks of the Alps, while in the opposite direction, the charming villages of Alta Langa create a picturesque link between Piedmont and Liguria.
Starting in the 1990s, Luigi’s children, Marco, an oenologist, and Paola, an agronomist, began working alongside him. With a growing appreciation for the quality and full potential of their vineyards and Nebbiolo grapes, they decided to craft single vineyard wines like the Barolo from the Roggeri and Rocchettevino vineyards.
With some small updates in the cellar, while still respecting Luigi’s traditional methods, the wines of Ciabot Berton have gradually gained recognition and are now enjoyed by many. Today, Ciabot Berton remains a family-run winery with a small production, allowing the Oberto family to pay close attention to every detail—from the vineyards to the finished bottle—so you can enjoy truly spectacular wines.
